In recent years, the importance of business continuity and organizational resilience has been highlighted by a series of critical events that have affected companies around the world. In this context, the differences and similarities between Business Continuity Management (BCM) and Organizational Resilience are often discussed, using ISO 22301 and ISO 22316 standards as a source.
As is well known, Business Continuity Management (BCM) focuses on planning and implementing preventive measures to ensure that the organization’s critical activities can be restored in a timely manner after a critical event. This may include creating business continuity plans, identifying risks, defining roles and responsibilities, and implementing emergency procedures.
On the other hand, Organizational Resilience refers to the organization’s ability to adapt to changes in the environment and remain efficient and productive even in the event of a critical event. This includes the ability to learn from one’s mistakes, to take a systemic approach to risk management, and to invest in staff training and development.
Although there is some overlap between the two concepts, it can be agreed that Organizational Resilience goes beyond BCM in that it focuses on creating an organization that is more flexible, accountable, and able to adapt to variations in the environment. While BCM focuses on risk management and continuity of critical activities, Organizational Resilience embraces a broader and more strategic view of the organization, incorporating risk management as part of a systemic approach to managing the organization.
In summary, Business Continuity Management and Organizational Resilience are both important concepts for ensuring business continuity and sustainability of the organization during critical events. However, while BCM focuses on risk management and continuity of critical activities, Organizational Resilience embraces a broader and more strategic view of the organization, incorporating risk management as part of a systemic approach to managing the organization.
